Did I do something wrong here?
I am a guitarist and I have been looking for other musicians to form a band. I occasionally check a website setup for local musicians where I live. The other day there was a post from a drummer looking to start or join a metal band. So I sent him a PM and asked him "How long have you been playing?". His reply was "what does it matter how long I've been playing". Did I do something wrong here? As long as I've been playing that question has always been asked to me. I've never had a problem with answering the question. My reply to him was "I assume you haven't been playing for long or you would just answer the question instead of being sensitive about".
Just curious what you guys think about this. Was I out of line, or is this guy just a dick?

Re: Did I do something wrong here?
That was a completely legitimate question. You don't want some guy that's only been playing for two days in your band. He probably blows ass and is ashamed of it lol

Your reply shoulda been "it matters because the longer you've been playing, the better you presumably are"
It sounds obvious, but when me and me mates were trawling for musicians ( long time ago now, heh ) we had so many thick buggers that we ended up putting "must be able to actually play" on the ads. And then we couldn't find a drummer for love nor money.......

either he's been playing since birth and he's insulted, or he bought himself a pair of sticks yesterday and he calls himself a drummer now. Eitherway, you gotta answer this question: what does this reaction say about his attitude, and do you want to work with someone with such a short fuse?
my answer would be: no.
Anyway, good luck in finding a decent drummer!! i know that here in holland, they're very hard to come by, and it's even harder to find a good one....

I know 5 that don't play in a band. Now a bass player is a different story

Re: Did I do something wrong here?
did you hear about the bass player who locked his keys in the car ? He had to call the fire brigade to get the drummer out.....

I'll try... patientlyEnd Of An Era wrote:i know that here in holland, they're very hard to come by, and it's even harder to find a good one....

But for now I'm just a guy with drum sticks, looking for a drum set and only experience with the toms, cymbals and (lots of) snare drum, no footwork.

Re: Did I do something wrong here?
That is a very good point. Attitude is something that some musicians have a problem with. It is hard to find a good drummer. Until I can find one I will just continue writing music. At least if I do find one then I'll have some tunes ready to go for us to play.End Of An Era wrote:either he's been playing since birth and he's insulted, or he bought himself a pair of sticks yesterday and he calls himself a drummer now. LOL! Well if you guys can relocate to the USA (Georgia) then give me a hollar.
Re: Did I do something wrong here?
Where I live like every other person is a drummer haha, a bassist is hard to find but luckily i am one. But to find a decent singer that likes metal, that's impossible.

You're lost in the woods and need to find someone to ask the way. You walk a little farther and you see Santa Claus, an in-tune bass player and an out-of-tune bass player. Which one do you ask for directions ?

Re: Did I do something wrong here?
In my former band there was a bassist audition once... I had to tune the bass for this guy.
I didn't mind though, because I love to tune instruments. The bassist had his cigarette break too so everyone was happy.
What comes to the original dilemma in this thread: if you send a PM just asking how long someone has been playing it's probably quite possible to get a such response. I mean if that was all that you asked, without any polite introductions.
Good luck with the search! I'm sure you have a band in no time.

Somewhere Far Away
Imaginations from the Different Side
The Skald's Song

I know it would be much better to have a good drummer to practice with, but hey at least you've got the drum tracks I'm doing for your songsteo_guardian wrote:I want a drummer who can play stuff like Blind Guardian drums.....
