The reality behind the web of lies

Greetings everyone, how about discussing something interesting? It’s been a long time since I had this topic in mind but never really got the chance to write it down til now. What I wanted to address is the real life application of the story behind Ayreon’s song “The Web of Lies” (lyrics are below in case you don’t know the song). We can take this forum as an example; I mean how easy is it for someone to pretend what he’s not on the web? Or how many people are willing to do this? For example I can pretend that I’m the coolest person in the forum and other people will believe me and we’ll be such good friends on the net but in reality I will nothing but a jackass and vice versa! Maybe for you guys in Europe it’s not that big of a deal because you at least meat once a member of the forum (BGOA for example) but as for me, someone who live in another continent, I can be fooling you around or you can trick me as well :? . Who’s gonna stop us? Nobody! Maybe Joost Is a dude from Zimbabwe pretending to be what he claim he is (don’t laugh it’s the first thing that came to my mind :P , I know that you all met him, except me of corpse) and maybe we can take this a little further to find out the impact of modern technologies on human interaction (which is getting weakened)

the lyrics:
[Simone Simons]:
Dear PX, I feel you are the one
What's your name? Where are you from?
I'm in love, though we never met
Looking for clues, I search the net

Dear PX, I'm waiting for your mail
Check every hour, to no avail
Been up all night, couldn't get to sleep
No way out, I'm in too deep

Dear PX, it's been 11 days
I'm kind of lost within this maze
Are you there? Give me but a sign
Are you at home? Are you on-line?

[Phideaux Xavier]:
Dear Simone, sorry for the wait
I've seen your pics, you're looking great
I'm all alone, dying for a date
I think we match, it must be fate

[Simone Simons]:
Dear Ol, I feel you are the one
what's your name? where are you from?
I'm in love, though we never met
Looking for clues, I search the net

Actually, I'm really Robert Mugabe, but please, don't tell this to anyone!

Wasn't the point of that song that she's afraid of real contact, breaking the relationship just when he would want to meet her while she really overinfatuated herself when it was just online.

You can't know.

For your information, SkyClad is George Bush, Joost is indeed a guy from Africa, End of an Emo is actually an emo himself, WVM was a beautiful, long-haired blonde girl from Sweden and I'm a 65 years old White Russian.

I believe the point is that by the time he responds to her, she is already infatuated with something else. I'm pretty sure it's talking about the weakening of social connections, and the shallowness of so many online relationships.

Lawl.. xD
I have to agree with Led Guardian. In general, Arjen is very critical about this computerized society, you can see it very clearly in other songs like Computer Eyes, Connect the Dots, etc.

I think it depends on the person. I'm kinda used to interact with to people via forums, msn, and all that stuff, although most of my friends I have known on the internet, I have met them later "in real life", and found out I wasn't wrong about them and their personalities. And I always try to be as honest as it is possible in this environment, so I expect that from the others too. Of course you can't be so naive to think everybody is so well-intentioned... :? I have seen a lot of situationes like Simone there...

I would not drink you, cream doesn't stay very good for 65 years.
j/k, of course I would drink you since us poor people can't really be too picky about our cocktails. :)

Well, it's already easy enough to pretend to be what you're NOT already in "real life", so i guess that if people want to do it online too, i just wont care and find it sad and pathetic for them.

Funny thing being, Arjen contacted Simone through myspace to ask her to sing that.

Hm, that would be possible, but first I would need to let it be pressed! :P After all, the money presses in our great country never stop running, it's perhaps the richest country in the world!

Do you know the story behind this song?

Arjen said he wrote it based on a friend of his who would did that online with girls. He'd say they were the love of his life while chatting with them and then weeks later he'd have another :)
