Yah, Amman was a very much deserved win
now it is speedskating for me :D
5000m males, Sven Kramer is high favorite, but both other dutchies (with Blokhuijsen now leading halfway through) are outside favs, as well as Fabris, Bøkko and Skobrev

Silver medal for Magdalena Neuner in 7.5 km women's biathlon sprint. Nice one, looking forward to the Pursuit on tuesday, she's in a great position for that one, beeing only 1.7 seconds behind today.

A very very very awesome race on the 5k men speedskating. Sven Kramer had to go against Shani Davis (numbers 1 and 2 in the "adelskalender", top list of pr's over all distances). and I had to say, I wasn't sure he'd make it. But in the 3 bouts after him, with all the challengers and a few outsiders, none made it to beat him. Bob de Jong and Enrico Fabris were disappointing, Lee Seung-Hoon was a revelation. Coming this close after only skating since september. And finally Ivan Skobrev managed to get a medal. After all these years.
I must say, I haven't seen any speedskating match that was this exciting in a long long time! GREAT!!
And the emotional explosion of Sven after he won, was just priceless.

Sucks about that Luge accident, poor bastard. The way the track was setup it was only a matter of time though.

that's the result of wanting more "action", higher speeds, spectacular images. Just have a look what kinds of sports where added to the olympics of late, you can see a clear tendency towards that.

Even some of the best of the world - like Zöggeler - crashed during practice, and the accident of the georgian athlet happened at a really bad place :(

Saw the rerun of the 5.000 meter final yesterday evening, was really funny to see Kramer run across the stadium and jump up to the spectators to get to his family and girlfriend.

Too bad my TV somehow broke down now, it's not working anymore :(
Why does this have to happen right NOW? :|

have to try that later tonight, don't know yet...

edit: just downloaded zattoo, that should work for now.

edit2:

Luge looking pretty good for Germany so far, with both Felix Loch and David Möller in the lead, guess they'll make it later tonight.
No luck in men's Biathlon though, but despite they messed up the shooting - due to the weather conditions they didn't have a chance anyway, everybody who started after maybe number 15 had lost when it started to ran and snow.

3000m speedskating women was no succes for the dutch, Not like we expected it. Ireen Wüst had only won last time in torino due to having an exceptionally good day, sadly not so today. Dutch women skaters are not so good at long distances, where the men ARE.
Anyway, Sablikova won, as was expected. Second was the german Beckert, as expected. These two have been fighting for the honours in the world cup circuit, with Beckert being teh only one who has beaten sablikova in quite a while.
Third was teh canadian Groves, which still leaves Canada without any gold medal in their home country (but teh games are still young... i hope they break their streak of no gold medals at home olympics)

Edit: yesterday, Canada finally won their first gold medal on the home olympics, Bilodeau won gold for Canada in the Mogul finale freestyle skiing. congrats canadians!

third gold already!
the downhill-race was very entertaining and thrilling - and now dario cologna won the cross country race over 15 km
("everybody" said that the allrounder cologna would be beat by the specialist...and now he won in an amazing time)

i never really cared for speedskating - but i guess, that's quite normal if your country isn't any good in a rather boring sport

I don't really care for speedskating either, although the german females are actually rather good.

Luge went really good so far for Germany - gold + silver for Felix Loch and David Möller at the male's luge, and the females should win gold as well, having won basically every race but one for the last, like, 12 years or so?

Looking foward to biathlon tomorrow, hope for Magdalena Neuner to win gold in pursuit, after the silver medal in the first race.

Á quick look at the medal count just now showed me that the swiss have a good idea.. who needs 10 medals in spread over all three colours when you can put all your atletes on the highest platform?
Seems that switserland is leading with their 3 gold medals and no others.. A golden future perhaps?

i wouldn't be surprised if we added some more gold to that list...but bigger countries will win two or three times as many gold medals as switzerland

and about the cross country race from yesterday: the other three swiss racer finished 12th, 15th and 17th...that's HUGE - we even would have won the team competition...if there were any ;)

let's see how the hockey tournament starts; switzerland probably has a very good defence...but the offense is quite weak this season

Another Lee won for South Korea, Wolf won silver for germany and bronze went to the chinese Wang, i'm wondering how different this could have been if Gerritsen didn't fall in the 1st bout.
(yes, i know none of you people care, but this is of course another post about speedskating)

What, US second in medal count? Unacceptable. 1st as usual is required.

Good on the Swiss :P

Was watching the downhill Snowboarding. Sucks how both Aussies went down. Surprised that we are where we are on the medalcount :P

Yes she can! Gold for Magdalena Neuner, what a great race! Though she was one of the favourites, it has been a gripping race from start to finish. Good to see that Magdalena has found a way out of her "mental breakdown" and now enjoys every minute of the race, even the standing shootings! Congratulations from my side, finally her dream has come true!

Just checked the other results: Another Gold medal won by Tatjana Hüfner (luge) and Jenny Wolf won silver. Seems like Germany is now first in the medal count. 8)

not a bad day for germany, indeed
with the women's downhill race and men's halfpipe event...switzerland might get another medal today

i watched some ice hockey yesterday; while switzerland wasn't all that bad it took the usa two individual tricks and a lucky punch to make'em already seem/be in another class

The U.S. currently has the most gold medals and the most total medals. How did this happen? We usually suck at winter games.

Damn that was an impressive 1000m again from Shani. Love his technique.

YES!!!

After the gold of Sven Kramer on the 5k, we entered our least succesful distances: 3k women, hardly any chance there; 500m men, close but no real podium chances. Then the 500m women, where there were two dutch ladies who had a serious chance for metal, but we finished 4th. 1000m men, good chances, but finishing 4-5-6 simply sucks!

Today 1000m women, silver and bronze, could have been gold and bronze, but Margot Boer stalled in the last 250 meters and became 6th.
Gerritsen was 2nd with a difference of 0.02 seconds to the canadian gold winner Nesbitt. 0.02 seconds basically means the same amount of meters: 0.02. such a small difference, such a tense race, really awesome. Then not to forget about our outsider Laurine van Riessen, no-one took her into account after a rather disappointing season, but early in the races she had put down a very good time, which only Gerritsen and Nesbitt passed in the last two races.
Great races, and more metal for holland!

GOOOOOOLLLLLDDDDD!!!!!

Last olympic gold medal on the 1500m men (longtrack) speedskating for Holland was in 1972. After 38 years there is a successor for Ard Schenk, his name is Mark Tuitert! Shani Davis was the biggest favorite amongst all who have knowledge about skating. But he couldn't go as fast as Tuitert did, awesome race!

since we had high hopes for another medal, i ended up watching the ski cross competition
it was quite entertaining and those four in the final run really very impressive...but i still believe that in other sports you have to train much harder to get have a chance at a medal

Gold & Bronze for the german women in Biathlon.

Magdalena Neuner has good chances to become the most successful athlete of these games, with 2 gold and 1 silver medal so far.

in Biathlon?
you got
Sprint
Pursuit
Single
Mass-Start

And relay

Today was the Mass start, the rest is already done but the relay (wich will be held on tuesday)
Russia and Germany are counted as the favourites there (at least when it comes to the women)

Golden weekend, it seems! Another gold, this time Ireen Wüst on the 1500m women. She did it almost the same way as Tuitert yesterday! Where Tuitert put down a new trackrecord, Wüst equalled the womens track record.
Perfect games!
