Cover better than the original?

#1 Post by loth » 06 Sep 2009 22:45

You know, lately i've been spending a lot of my time on youtube, and i came across many covers. Some of them were simply awful, some - the otherwise. People tend to say that the original is ALWAYS better than a cover, but just listen to Blind Guardian's "The Wizard" - without comparison better than the older version (in my opinion, at least), wouldn't you agree?

So, to say it shortly, please name covers better than original, if you belive it's possible :)
(yeah, maybe it's a lame topic, but i'm a newby here and have to start with somenthing :P)

several of mine:
The Wizard (Uriah Heep Cover) - by Blind Guardian
Rainbow in the dark (Dio cover) - J. Ahola
In The Air Tonight (Phil Collins cover) - Marco Hietala (musically worse, but I like vocal part)
Welcome Home (Metallica cover) by Apocalyptica (there's more passion in this version :) )
My IQ test came back negative.

IMO Deicide's version of "Black Night" is better than the original by Deep Purple. But this is, of couse, because I don't like really old rock/metal like Deep Purple.

Today, I discovered Arjen Lucassen's Guilt Machine's cover of Leonard Cohen's The Stranger Song.

Pretty impressive.
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower is better than the Bob Dylan original.

Back to the topic, Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From My Friends beats the shit out of the original version by the Beatles.

I like the version of My Sharona by HammerFall more than the original, it´s heavier  though many don´t like it.
Also Locomotive Breath by Helloween is better than the original (in my opinion).

Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust, and especially the brilliant version on Unleashed in the East, also beats the original (by Joan Baez). Still, the original version is pretty good too.

Some others...

Therapy? - Diane (original: Hüsker Dü)
Gary Jules - Mad World (original: Tears for Fears)
Pet Shop Boys - Go West (original: Village People)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (original: Nine Inch Nails)

Hammerfall suck balls, try the Pink Cream 69 version instead. :P

Then there are all the covers from Machinae Supremacy.

Also, off the top of my head, Motörhead's cover of Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen kicks ass.

Ulver - Solitude (original by Black Sabbath)

It's the only cover that I would say it's better than the original.
I like many other covers, but the only covers I really enjoy are those that change completely the original song. So I don't put it the way "this is better than that", just "it's differently enjoyable".

But the way Ulver covered Solitude is just amazing, in my opinion.
Black Sabbath's version itself is amazing, but Ulver got that song and really expanded it in all its darker potential.
I loved the original version, but when I heard this cover, I was just "OMG, this is how it was really supposed to sound".

Perfectly fits the lyrics.
And that trumpet. Oh, that trumpet.
"Well, I was about to announce the next song, but I think we'll have to skip it...
Yeah, because we have a pretty sad song here, and you all seem so happy to me...!"

It's a great cover, indeed, but I'm not sure I would call it better than the original. There are two versions of that song that both are fantastic, should it be necessary at all to say that one is better than the other? I'd rather just have both. :D

This song isn't originally by Johnny Cash. The original version was recorded in 1949 by Burl Ives.

I like the Johnny Cash version more than the Burl Ives version, so I guess I should include it. ;)

You can't be serious! The original by Gary Moore and Phil Lynott is so much better, with fantastic vocals and guitars and atmosphere. Sonata Arctica's version, on the other hand, features horribly annoying nasal vocals, and the great guitar leads largely replaced by annoying plastic-sounding keyboards.

Helloween's I Want Out seems almost a cover of this song too, btw.

Agree, that cover is good... Still didn't appreciate that much Elvenking's acoustic album. In some songs I just can't help feeling they're just... aping Skyclad.

Liked Eluveitie's acoustic more, give it a try, it's free listen at their MySpace, and it has no growls, just female vocals :)

Don't get me wrong, I love Purple, I just think they have loads of better songs than Smoke on the Water, which I frankly find a little bland.

to be honest, that cover absolutely sucks. Sorry. You can't do that to Smoke on the Water. If I didn't know the original, I might like it. But that way... no.

What I like very much is Blackmore's Night version of Can't Help Falling in Love.

Oh, and the Jazzkantine version of I Was Made for Loving You is way hotter than the original:.

Shitty 80's pop artist's "It's A Sin" covered by GAMMA RAY! Total kick ass version.
You're going to hell. But not the cool one, that's where I'll go.
You go to the crappy hell.

I like the version of The Petshop Boys more than the one by Gamma Ray but it´s a good cover though.

I like the Alkemyst version of Eagle Fly Free better than the Helloween version.

Incidentally, Alkemyst - Through Painful Lanes (which is where this cover is from) is a grossly underappreciated power/prog album. My favorite from 2008.

You should hear the Bass Invaders version. It actually manages to be worse than the original.

The Pagan's Mind version of Hallo Spaceboy is one of those damn good examples where a cover is absolutely awesome.
They made their studioversion sound like David Bowie's live version.

 just had to check that song out - didn't know they covered it
it's not even that bad...but that's probably because manowar's original is just that damn good!
EDIT: eeek! the middle part is much weaker than the perfect original!

I think Knorkator's Jazzy version of Beating Around the Bush is also more entertaining then AC/DC's original.

Ugh... I thought I would like HellBassBeaters, as I'm a huge fan of bass (I even sing bass), but I hated it. This song in particular. For God's sake, the vocalist can't even hit all the notes. Why in God's name would you choose to do a cover that your vocalist can't even sing?

Is it possible that nobody mentioned A Perfect Circle's version of John Lennon's Imagine?

When I first read they had done this cover I was like "blah, you blasphemers, you simply can't cover that", but I must say they did a good job.
No way it's "better" than the original: but suddenly I had the thought that Mr. Lennon would love it.
Because times are a little changed, now, since when John wrote the original song. By then, he might have had hope. Maybe, now, seeing how things have evolved, he would have written it this way.
It's like they got the song and... radically turned the original meaning, leaving the same lyrics.

So creepy!

Yeah, because we have a pretty sad song here, and you all seem so happy to me...!"

APC's version completely shits over the Lennon original one. I hate Lennon's ultimate hippie "hope" song. And besides it's a song that's been overplayed and burnt. But APC took that "hope" songs and made it so depressive and bitter. Magic.
