Which are the gayest power metal bands ever?

#1 Post by I Pity The Fool » 29 Apr 2010 19:45

Apart from BG I'm no fan of the genre. It's such cliched, cheese driven hilarity. I had the misfortune of trying some Epica, followed by some Dragonforce and I was digusted... hence this thread.

You can choose upto 10 bands. I've thrown BG in there, just for the sake of inclusivity.

Mmm, lots of my favourite bands listed here.

Anyway, I could only vote Manowar, because of some of their album covers (and even then it's just a joke)

By the way, I was in the class with a gay person for three years, and he was into metal. But, he hated power metal because it wasn't extreme enough (exception was Sonata Arctica). So why would power metal be the gay genre? I think there's better odds in the extreme metal corner (just look at Gaahl)

I meant gay in the 'that's gay' sense, not homosexual. Although Manowar come close there too, they're both gay and homosexual. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, atleast the average gay person doesn't go slathering on the baby oil.

I was shocked that Dickinson was plugging it on BBC6. Then I realised they're one of the few new Brit metal bands around, and music is so generally crap so there is no competition.

For me it's Dragonhorseshit followed by Gaypica.

Iced Earth, Savatage, Symphony X, Epica on that list??? you clearly have no idea what power metal is about, nor evidently how gay is to use gay as a bad definition for something that has nothing to do anyway with being gay.

I went with the wikipedia definition of power metal and they include them. I'm not too interested in figuring out just how power metal a group are. There obviously is the melodic Euro power metal but Iced Earth sound like they could be power metal too.

What makes a band gay and since you used the superlative, how can one band be gayer than another?
Just wondering, I want to answer well.

This poll, as juvenile as it may be, is fundamentally flawed. Epica, Savatage and Symphony X don't play power metal, and the band Stratovarius doesn't exist.

Poll also allows 14 choices now.

Why not? Cheesy works just fine.

I can also say its juvenile, cringe worthy. Perhaps all this is true of Blind Guardian too. For me, the difference is in quality mainly. A vast difference there. Blind Guardian is LOTR style cheese whereas Kamelot or Rhapsody is on the level of those cheap Hollywood horror or fantasy films.

Juvenile? I haven't been to many metal concerts, I admit, but it always occured to me that there's plenty of older people. And extreme metal fits better with teenage feelings than power metal, so try again.

Except for Savatage, Manowar, and a few albums from Nightwish and BG, everyone of those are pretty gay.

I've never considered Savatage power metal though.

This thread is gay, though I had to vote for Dragonfarce, OP should be ashamed  even if he doesn't like Power Metal, putting perfectly good bands that other people may very well love in a poll is just idiotic

Just because the music might be juvenile it doesn't mean it's only listened to by kids.

There's many adults who listen to things like 'Breaking the law', your typical 80s Transformers/Centurions type metal.

I am kinda offended by your use of the word 'gay' to describe music you don't like. Even if a band consisted of just homosexual musicians, the band would not be gay: the musicians would be.

Like I said I didn't mean to equate gay with homosexual. At the most I would say pansy, to take the meaning in that direction. And I'm not just talking about music I don't like. I can see people saying Guardian are gay and I wouldn't disagree entirely. The difference is BG is quality cheese/gay. But the other bands are gay in that there's no taste to them.

Seriously just look at Sava''s HOTMK video which is true D&D right down to the silly screamms. Or the song Beeeliieeeevvve! That's cheesy, cliched, Hollywood animation inspired family friendly Disney metal. Irrevocably gay.

It's a weird discussion. Just take a look again at the title:

"Which are the gayest power metal bands ever?"

Maybe on a black/death metal forum there's lots of people who will have the time of their life and find it 100% funny, but not here. If you want to discuss or criticize power metal, at least try to make some relevant points. It is possible, I know a guy on another forum who's really good at that.

The word "gay" is a moniker applied to certain people. Also taking that word to mean "bad", "stupid", "unmanly" or whatever it is that you exactly would like it mean - or do you maybe just want to express your disdain in some way? - is not only insulting to those people, but also contributes to a general negative image of said people. I guess it seems innocent enough before you think about it, but once you have spend some time to think about it and don't take measures to break your habit of using "gay" as a pejorative, you are either pretty stupid or you actually do intent to support the ostracism and prejudice experienced by gay people all over. Which in my book would make you an asshole. So, here is your opportunity to think and reflect about it.

Just imagine what implications "heavy metal" and "metal-head" had during the 90ties (if you're old enough) or how it would be if people started calling everything they dislike "nigger". It plays on unjustified stereotypes and does nothing but make you feel good about not being gay while reinforcing the notion that being gay is somehow bad.

I'll give you an opportunity to ponder on whether you're not being a condescending twat. Why should I care what I am in your book?

The word gay is seperate from homosexual in this context. Should we prevent happy people from using the word next, because in the view of your pompous holiness, the word is used to describe only 'certain people.'

I suppose words like niggardly should be banned because some idiot will feel its a little too close to nigger?

And there's also the lame attempt to suggest I'm not 'old enough'. Sad. Go pick on someone who listens to Manowar or Savatage, they're easier to challenge intellectually.

You mean I should stop calling Pink Stëël a gay band? :(

On topic: I have not much problems if people call things gay jokingly, as long as there's no underlying homophobic subtext. (Heck, I even do that myself at times) However, often this homophobic subtext does seem to be present, to various degrees, and even if it's not intended, calling something "gay" may have the effect on others of suggesting that it's cool to use words that subconsciously equate 'homosexuality' with negative qualities.

Then again, when you start with this line of reasoning, it's difficult to say where you have to stop. Calling something 'retarded' may be seen (probably rightfully so) as being insulting towards people with mental retardation. But what about a word like 'idiot', that in the beginning of the 20th century still was used to describe people with severe mental retardation? Nowadays people don't really have this association anymore, and associate 'idiot' more with something to call someone who does a stupid/dumb thing.

And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

Or maybe you should start realizing that your 'humour' is lost on pretty much all of the regulars on this forum. Even though I can hardly say that this forum is characterized by a lack of humour.
