it is,but it's the truth, and even more in third world countries such as mine, and our whole sub continent, you can vote for right wing, left wing,it's the same shit up to this point, nothing changes for us middle class folks, and for the poor people living in the ghettos it's worse, they don't get anything from the government. The only people who benefit from the decisions politicians make are the insanely rich people who rule us from behind the curtain.Orodaran wrote:Isn't this a very depressing thought, though?NightReaper wrote:As it is with politics everywhere around the world. About Obama,i must say he's all over the news, everywhere, people talk about him as if he was some sort of saviour. The other day i ran into some americans(they were cool guy by the way) on the exit of a bar,and i started talking to them about many things, they hated Bush, that's a point they made very clear to me,but as soon as i said "Obama" they started yelling "WOOOO YEAAAHHH OBAMAAAA!",it was really funny.Needless to say i was drunk and they were too.

I'm also a limited government type of guy, but let's be honest here, dude. Is the willingness to commit pre-emptive war against non-hostile nations, the practice of giving billion dollars worth of government contracts to war profiteer companies, and our retarded practice of helping oil companies rip off the United States (and the rest of the world) really a sound financial plan? Let's be honest, if I had to choose between using all that money to implement a social health-care system instead, I'd choose the health care.Zeernebrooch wrote:Incoming Wall of Text!
also a disclaimer: All of you who have more a socialist/liberal/leftist point of view on politics and the running of a country, you will not like what i am going to type. I have no allegiances to any party because i do not believe they are what will save this declining country we call the USA. This is a post of opinion, so don't get all butt hurt over what i say, no matter how strongly you disagree with me.
personally don't want a democrat, no matter how bad the last republican pres was. For one thing the Socialized medicine will do nothing but raise taxes and probably end up costing us even more in the long run (yes i know that both sides are basically going to do it no matter what so don't pull that on me).
I hate the fact that the States have become a welfare state where you are not responsible for your own actions. Go bankrupt trying to "flip" houses? Here comes Uncle Sam to pay off your debt! All this crap is done using money from taxes that could be used on more important thing like that will do more help than letting some idiot that lost all their cash in real estate or what have you and helping people that need help because they have no other out let that can help them.
What i am trying to say is that people are now relying on government not to protect their rights and such but to be their mommy and make sure they can survive. This is NOT the reason for government, but it is soemthing that the left and to some extent the right intend to do.
And that is why i will probably not vote, along with he fact that in all truth one vote will not tip the balance in my area no matter who i chose to vote for. There will not be a truly great president IMO until we reach a time of great need (although it is arguable that we are in such a time).
Ether way we are S.O.L and J.W.F. Shit out of Luck and Jolly Well Fucked.
But that is just my opinion. keep in mind opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one and they all stink!
We need a democrat in the Whitehouse to act like an adult, raise taxes and pay off some of our debt. We can't just go on running the country like this forever, we have to pay shit off.

The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
It's the country for me.
You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.
You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.

I disagree, we should take it away from everyone. Welfare doesn't build a "Great Society", it subsidizes failure. Welfare doesn't cure poverty, it slaps on a societal band-aid. This "safety net" has only been around 40-odd years; before that, people weren't dropping like flies because they couldn't get free money. If the rich want to buy off their consciences by donating to the poor, there's nothing I can do to stop them, but I can't condone a country making it mandatory.Led Guardian wrote:I know that there are people who do abuse it, but let me reiterate:

Back to Obama, I like the guy. Unfortunately, he seems the pro-gun control type, whick sickens and disgusts me. Hopefully he'll block any anti-gay marriage schemes in Congress.

Don't be ridiculous, man, our IOUs to every significant world power is the only reason we haven't been wiped off the map yet. The rationale of the welfare state has never been to help people. Yes, it's whole purpose is in fact to be just that, a societal band aid - but why is that a bad idea? It lessons the extremes of modern capitalism in order to help preserve the socio-economic status quo. The shape of the modern welfare state is owed to, of all people, Mr. Arch-conservative himself Otto von Bismarck. The likely alternative would have been social upheaval and possibly even violent revolution. The system exists to ward off precisely that.

If the system begs its own destruction, and the only thing holding back the fury of the lower classes at their abysmal state of affairs is a massive government-implemented policy of bribery, then upheaval and revolution seem legitimate options. My point is, if welfare is ever necessary for a country to prevent widespread dissatisfaction, then the country needs reform at a much more fundamental level; handouts can only stem the flow of public outcry for so long.Bloodeagle wrote:The rationale of the welfare state has never been to help people. What kind of reform?
You're talking about changing the entire economic basis of society. That's not something you can could change with legislation, even if you wanted to. Those kinds of mammoth changes, like the shift from feudalism to capitalism before it, are the results of major historical processes.
But before considering a practically Marxian approach to the situation (in case you were unaware, communists are by and large opposed to the notion of the welfare state as well, considering it to be "bribing the proletariat), you should consider how much you have personally to lose.

The last debate is tonight! Any Americans going to watch it besides me? Is anyone at all going to watch it besides me? Who knows, maybe it'll be better than the last one.
Personally, I'm hoping Obama wins the debate. Who could have guessed?

The debate last night wasn't actually too bad. The back and forth discussion made it pretty interesting. I felt Obama did a good job defending against McCain's bogus Ayer's and ACORN claims. Not that that stopped McCain from repeating the same statements that Obama had just debunked. That and the tired "Obama will raise taxes on the middle class and fine small businesses" lie that all the tax experts and fact-checking sites keep saying is false. The people making over $250,000 will get taxed more, but everyone else will get a cut. As for small businesses, they will be taxed at a higher rate on the money they make over $250,000 only, but they'll also get a tax credit for providing health insurance and- by Obama's plan- be exempted from capital gains taxes.
Basically, McCain is acting like a cornered animal. He's hostile and defensive and he's lashing out at Obama in the hopes of landing some punches. He kept interrupting Obama during the debate, which is incredibly rude and to me indicates a lack of control in dealing with other people (which the past has already shown). He's falling behind and knows it, and he's starting to grab at air in an attempt to climb back up.
Obama on the other hand is just holding his ground. He knows he's ahead and is just holding his ground. He's cool and level headed, and wouldn't take McCain's bait, instead just responding calmly. He's acting a lot more presidential in my opinion, and I think there's a good chance that the vote in November will reflect that.

Alright, here it is at about 4:24.
McCain did do that at the end, hamming it up because he and Obama were both trying to go in the same direction. It is photoshopped though. They moved the candidates closer together for one thing, and you can see a kind of fuzz around them that might be from a sharpen tool or something. Also, as you can see from the video, McCain was facing more towards the camera than Obama. Still hilarious though!

Looks like Obama's going to win if the exit polls are right, at least according to pollster.
http://www.pollster.com/
Obama has 200 electors now (270 needed), and there are four states left with a strong preference for Obama (Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii) in earlier polls, giging 77 more electors. Even a Republican Florida won't be able to change this.
